Since 2008, Russell Lower School have been involved with Ampthill & District Rotary Club in the Rotary Young Writers competition, the Rotary shoebox scheme, the Ampthill Rotary Tree of Light and fundraising to help with the eradication of Polio. The logical next step was to form a Rotakids group.
Rotarian Maureen Milway met the pupils in year 3 in July and between 20 and 30 of them decided they wanted to form a group. (click below to read more)
The first meeting was held at the beginning of September when Maureen explained the importance of the Rotakids promise displayed on the pledge cards.
“As a Rotakid, I endeavour to be fair to all, to serve my community and to show respect to others. To make a difference to: our school, our community, our world”.
The pledge cards were given to all those who wanted to be included. Then a discussion took place about what activities should be chosen for the year. Rotary shoeboxes were chosen for this term and the pupils were reminded what should be included in and what should be excluded from the shoeboxes. They also agreed that planting purple croci this term to distribute to the elderly in February and thus tie in with the Polio campaign would be an excellent community project.
Last week the students gave a presentation in assembly and distributed the shoeboxes to every class for filling. They also held elections for chair person, secretary & treasurer.
This week Rotarians Maureen Milway & Bev Blackham joined a Rotakids meeting to talk about planting the croci. Bev explained how this should be done and a lot of discussion took place about the importance of having the croci the right way up! We are very fortunate that Waitrose in Ampthill have agreed to supply the compost as part of their community involvement.
