TODAY IN HISTORY

AUGUST 4
1934:Playing for the New York Giants, Mel Ott becomes the first player in modern-day Major League Baseball to score six runs in a single game, helping his team beat the Philadelphia Phillies 21-4. A decade later, Ott would tie his six-run record, the only player ever to do so.

1957: The Everly Brothers introduce their new single, "Wake Up Little Susie," on The Ed Sullivan Show. The song stirs controversy with scandalous lyrics describing a high school couple who accidentally fall asleep while on a date at a drive-in movie theater.

1997: Jeanne Calment, the world's oldest person, dies at age 122 in Arles, France, the same city in which she was born in 1875. Calment, who was a light but constant smoker, had mentioned olive oil, port wine, chocolate and laughter as some of the factors in her remarkable lifespan, which remains the longest certifiably known in human history.
