AUGUST 14

1945:President Harry S. Truman announces that Japan has unconditionally surrendered, sparking massive celebrations among the Allied countries and the end of World War II in the Pacific. Because of the time difference, it is already Aug. 15 in Japan. The formal Japanese surrender would occur on Sept. 2 aboard the battleship USS Missouri.

1880: Exactly 632 years after its construction began, Cologne Cathedral, the largest Gothic-style cathedral in northern Europe, is completed in Cologne, Germany. The 516-feet-tall cathedral is the tallest building in the world, but it would be surpassed in height by the Washington Monument in 1884.

1935: President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs the Social Security Act into law, providing financial security for older people and the unemployed in one of the most successful and enduring programs to come out of the New Deal.
