1990:Former Beatle Paul McCartney draws a record crowd of 184,000 people to the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is the largest attendance for a single recording artist in history.

1994: Astronomers Alexander Wolszczan and Dale Frail announce that they have discovered several planets orbiting pulsar PSR 1257+12. The discovery is widely recognized as the first detection of planets outside of our own solar system. More than 700 extrasolar planets in orbit around stars other than our Sun have been discovered since then.

1789: Federalist Party leader John Adams is sworn in as the first vice president of the United States, serving under President George Washington.

753:Mythological date for when Rome is founded by twins Romulus and Remus.

1856:The first rail train to pass over the mighty Mississippi River between Davenport, Iowa and Rock Island.

1989:Tiananmen Square student protests in Beijing begin.
