1998:Ted Kaczynski, the former mathematics professor who became known as the
Unabomber after a 17-year-long campaign of mail bombs against
universities and airlines, agrees to a plea bargain to serve life in
prison without parole.
1901: Queen Victoria dies at age 81 at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, England, ending a 63-year reign, the longest of any British monarch. During her reign, the overseas British Empire grew to its greatest size, while her many descendants, now among many European royal and noble families, gave her the nickname "the grandmother of Europe."
1984: Home viewers of Super Bowl XVIII get the first look at the Apple Macintosh personal computer in a television advertisement. The commercial, directed by Ridley Scott, is based on George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984.
