I n June, Rotarians will assemble in Montréal, Québec, Canada, for the 2010 RI Convention. That gives you just under a year to learn un peu Québec French. In addition to bonjour, s’il vous plaît , and merci , you might find the following terms useful.
boîte á chanson
A club that plays the style of French folk music known as chanson.
calèche
A horse-drawn carriage. Find one at the Old Port or the Place d’Armes.
dépanneur
A convenience store or corner shop, this is also known as a dep .
flâner
Meaning “to stroll,” this is a perfect way to experience Montréal.
Je me souviens
Québec’s motto, this means “I remember.”
Plateau Mont-Royal
Known simply as the Plateau, this neighborhood features beaucoup boutiques, cafes, and Victorian charm.
poutine
A famed local dish consisting of french fries smothered in gravy and cheese curds.
Québécois
The colloquial name for the French spoken in Québec, or for a person from Québec.
ringuette
Similar to hockey, this game is played on ice skates, but it uses a ring instead of a puck.
Vieux-Montréal
Montréal’s cobblestoned old city, home to the 1829 Basilique Notre-Dame and the Centre d’histoire de Montréal.
