Since 1978, the Glaucoma Research Foundation (glaucoma.org) has funded innovative research into better treatments and an eventual cure for glaucoma, a group of eye disorders that accounts for up to 12 percent of blindness cases in the U.S. Most often, glaucoma results from a buildup of fluid in the eye, which damages the optic nerve and causes a gradual loss of vision. The most common form of the disease usually shows few symptoms at first, so an early diagnosis is critical for preventing vision loss. The GRF website describes glaucoma symptoms and risk factors, as well as providing guides to glaucoma medications and a directory of specialists. GRF-funded research projects currently seek to identify the genes that cause glaucoma and to develop more effective drugs to treat it.
The charity has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
