1954:After processing more than 12 million immigrants in its 62 years, the immigration center on Ellis Island closes its doors to America for good.

1920: U.S. District Court Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis is hired as baseball’s first commissioner.

1948: Hideki Tojo, the commander of Japanese imperial forces during World War II, is sentenced to death by hanging along with six other Japanese military leaders by a war crimes tribunal.
