Junior Blind of America (JuniorBlind.org) was founded 60 years ago to provide therapeutic recreational activities for children who are blind, visually impaired, or multidisabled, enabling them to lead more independent lives. At Camp Bloomfield, its 40-acre campground in California’s Santa Monica Mountains, trained counselors teach visually impaired kids to enjoy horseback riding, fishing, kayaking, hiking, swimming, music, and archery. Junior Blind also runs a school where specialists provide students with individualized lessons and help teens prepare for college. The organization’s Infant & Early Childhood Program provides parents with in-home support and teaches families to develop communication skills. Another program trains young adults to use assistive technology for computers so they can compete in today’s tech-driven job market.
The charity has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
