THE FIRST WORD

uptalk
Other common vocal irritants include "uptalk"—pronouncing statements as if they were questions—and "vocal fry"—ending words in a raspy growl.
The term "uptalk" apparently was coined by the science writer James Gorman in a column in the New York Times in 1993. It is sometimes called "high rising terminal," which is a much less evocative term.
