DECEMBER 11

1936: King Edward VIII publicly announces his abdication from the throne of the United Kingdom, due to his desire to marry American divorcee Wallis Warfield Simpson, against the wishes of the British government and the Church of England. His younger brother, then the Duke of York, will assume the throne as King George VI; Britain's current reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, is his daughter.

1965:Motown's first successful female group, The Marvelettes release hit "Please, Mr. Postman."

1946: John D. Rockefeller Jr. donates $8.5 million in the form of New York City real estate to serve as the site of the United Nations' world headquarters.

1994: Russian President Boris Yeltsin orders troops into the southern region of Chechnya to put down a rebellion of separatist Chechen fighters who want the republic to break away from the Russian Federation. Although Russian troops quickly take the Chechen capital of Grozny, fierce Chechen resistance causes the war to drag on for two years. Chechnya remains a de facto independent state until the Second Chechen War, which brings Chechnya back under Russian federal control in 1999.



1941:Germany and Italy declare war on US

1792:French Revolution: King Louis XVI of France is put on trial for treason by the National Convention.

1620:103 Mayflower pilgrims land at Plymouth Rock

1816:Indiana is accepted into the Union as the 19th state of the U.S.

2008: FBI agents arrested Bernie Madoff and charge him with one count of securities fraud. It would later be revealed that Madoff ran the largest Ponzi scheme ever.
