 1952:Americans really do "like Ike," as U.S. voters elect Republican candidates Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard Nixon in a 55-44 percent victory over the Democratic ticket of Adlai Stevenson and John Sparkman.

1842: Young lawyer and future U.S. president Abraham Lincoln, 33, marries wealthy Kentucky native Mary Todd, 10 years his junior, at her sister's home in Springfield, Ill.

1995: Extremist Israeli law student Yigal Amir assassinates Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin at a pro-peace rally in Tel Aviv, Israel, later stating that he murdered the respected politician because Rabin's attempts to achieve peace with the Palestinians through the Oslo Accords would mean "giving our country to the Arabs."

1847:Sir James Young Simpson, a British physician, discovers the anesthetic properties of chloroform.

1984: While a student at the University of Texas at Austin, Michael Dell creates PCs Limited - a company which he would later call Dell.
