OCTOBER 4

 1976:Barbara Walters becomes the first woman to coanchor an evening news program. She joined Harry Reasoner behind the desk of the ABC Evening News after signing an impressive $1 million contract.

1957: The Soviet satellite Sputnik 1 is launched into orbit, beginning the Space Age as Earth's first artificial satellite. With a diameter of only 23 inches, Sputnik 1 will orbit at about 18,000 miles per hour; its accompanying rocket booster is even visible from Earth.

1965: Pope Paul VI makes the first visit by a current pope to the Western Hemisphere, spending a single whirlwind day in New York, where he addresses the General Assembly at the United Nations, meets with President Lyndon Johnson and attends a public Mass at Yankee Stadium.

1927:Gutzon Borglum begins sculpting Mt. Rushmore.

1961:Alvin & the Chipmunks get their own TV show, The Alvin Show, on CBS.
