TODAY IN HISTORY


SEPTEMBER 2

 1945:Japanese Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu formally surrenders aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, ending World War II. Gen. Douglas MacArthur, supreme commander for the Allied powers, and representatives from nine Allied countries also sign the surrender document.

1901: Vice President Theodore Roosevelt famously describes his foreign policy vision to "speak softly and carry a big stick" in a speech at the Minnesota State Fair. Twelve days later, upon the assassination of President William McKinley, Roosevelt would become president of the United States. 

1995: Musicians including Bruce Springsteen, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and John Mellencamp celebrate the opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum by performing at a celebratory concert at Cleveland Municipal Stadium.

1991:Baltic States independence recognized

1945:Vietnam: independence from France

1969:The first ATM machine goes into service - at Chemical Bank in Rockville Center, New York - changing the banking industry forever.
