JULY 4

1826:Former U.S. presidents and founding fathers Thomas Jefferson and John Adams die on the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on this day in 1776. Both served on the committee that drafted the declaration, penned primarily by Jefferson. Jefferson's last words are reported to be "Is it the Fourth?" Adams, told it was July 4th, said clearly: "It is a great day. It is a good day." He is also reported to have said, just before he died: "Thomas Jefferson survives," although Jefferson had died a few hours earlier. James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, would also die on Independence Day, exactly five years later.

1862: Charles Dodgson, better known under the pen name of Lewis Carroll, begins telling 10-year-old Alice Liddell and her sisters about the fantastic adventures of a young girl, also named Alice; these stories would become the basis for the classic novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, which is published three years later.

1987: Czech-born American tennis star Martina Navratilova defeats Germany's Steffi Graf 7-5 6-3 to win the Wimbledon ladies' singles title for the sixth consecutive year. Navratilova would end up taking home the title a record nine times. Exactly 12 years later, Pete Sampras would defeat fellow American Andre Agassi in three sets, setting a Wimbledon record by winning his sixth men's singles title in seven years.
