1972:Associated Press photographer Nick Ut snaps one of the most memorable photographs of the Vietnam War, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photo depicting 9-year-old Kim Phuc running naked down the street after a napalm attack on her home village of Trang Bang.

1947: Lassie, the world's most famous and courageous collie, makes her debut in Lassie on ABC radio, sponsored appropriately by Red Heart Dog Food. A dog named Pal plays Lassie, with animal imitator Earl Keen filling in for some extra barks.

1969: Switch-hitting baseball legend Mickey Mantle's uniform number, 7, is retired during Mickey Mantle Day at Yankee Stadium, recognizing Mantle's 18 seasons with the New York Yankees.

1948:The first Porsche car is completed.

1990:14th FIFA world cup kicks off in Italy, which is 2nd nation to host World Cup for 2nd time.
