TODAY IN HISTORY

JUNE 1

1925:Lou Gehrig substitutes for Wally Pipp at first base, playing in the first of his streak of 2,130 consecutive baseball games for the New York Yankees, a streak that would last until May 1939. Gehrig's record of most consecutive MLB games would finally be broken by Baltimore Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. in September 1995.

1869: Thomas Edison, then a 22-year-old telegraph operator, receives the first of his many patents, for an "electrographic vote recorder" that will allow lawmakers to cast their votes on issues recorded mechanically. Over his lifetime, Edison would receive a whopping 1,093 patents, more than any other American inventor.

1999: Shawn Fanning, an 18-year-old freshman at Northeastern University, launches the Internet file-sharing site Napster, allowing users to upload and download music MP3 files from one another. Napster would draw the ire of the recording industry and most famously the band Metallica for copyright infringement issues.
