1981:Yale University architecture student Maya Lin is announced as the winner of the competition to design the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, beating out 1,420 other entries.

1937: After a voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, the Hindenberg airship, a German dirigible filled with hydrogen, catches fire while attempting to dock in Lakehurst, N.J., crashing and killing 36 passengers and crew members.

1954: British athlete and medical student Roger Bannister runs the first sub-4 minute mile, running a 3:59.4 at a track meet at Iffley Road Track in Oxford, England.

1889:The Eiffel Tower is officially opened to the public at the Universal Exposition in Paris.

1782:Construction begins: Grand Palace in Bangkok, residence of King of Siam

1957:American television show "I Love Lucy" has last show on CBS after running 6 years.

1682:The Sun King, Louis XIV, moves the French court to Versailles.
