1862:The greatly outnumbered Mexican forces of Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza are victorious against the French forces of Napoleon III at the Battle of Puebla, an event celebrated by Mexicans (and even more non-Mexicans) as Cinco de Mayo. Feliz 150, Cinco de Mayo.

1921: Fashion designer Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel introduces her famed (and still best-selling) perfume Chanel No. 5, to coincide with the release of her latest dress collection. The scent was created by Ernest Beaux and released on the fifth day of the fifth month, in accordance with Chanel’s numeric superstitions.

1961: Blasting off aboard NASA’s Freedom 7 capsule, Alan B. Shepard Jr. becomes the first American astronaut in space, less than a month after Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin had become the first man to reach space and orbit the Earth. Shepard’s suborbital flight lasts 15 minutes; it would be astronaut John Glenn on Feb. 20, 1962, who would become the first American to match Gagarin’s orbital success.

1930:Amy Johnson first woman ever to fly solo (from England to Australia).

1904:Boston Red Sox pitcher Cy Young throws first perfect game of modern era

1494:Christopher Columbus discovers Jamaica and names it Santa Gloria.
