1967:Elvis Presley marries longtime girlfriend Priscilla Beaulieu in Las Vegas. Elvis was 32 and Priscilla 21; they would divorce six years later.

1931: From the White House, President Herbert Hoover symbolically dedicates the 1,250 feet high Empire State Building in New York City, then the highest skyscraper in the world.

1960: American U-2 spy plane pilot Gary Powers is captured in Sverdlosk, U.S.S.R., after being shot down by Soviet anti-aircraft weapons. The United States is forced to admit that the plane had been on a covert surveillance mission, rather than on a routine weather flight.

1707:Great Britain is formed upon the unification of England, Wales, and Scotland.

1885:The first skyscraper, a 10-story building located on the corner of LaSalle and Adams in Chicago, begins construction.

1844:Samuel Morse sends the first telegraphic message.

1952:Mr. Potato Head introduced to world
