1941:Director Orson Welles' cinematic masterpiece, Citizen Kane, loosely based on the life of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst, premieres at the RKO Palace Theater in New York.

1960: American U-2 spy plane pilot Francis Gary Powers is shot down over Sverdlovsk in the Soviet Union, forcing the United States to admit that the plane had been on a covert surveillance mission. Powers will be exchanged for Soviet spy Rudolf Abel on Feb. 10, 1962.
