THE BOTTOM LINE

The worst team in major league baseball, the 46-93 Houston Astros, is also far and away the most profitable in major league history. Thanks to surging TV revenues and a stingy active-team payroll of under $13 million—that’s less than 64 individual players on other teams make—the Astros are expected to have an operating income of $99 million this season.
