DECEMBER 9

1793: American educator Noah Webster founds The American Minerva, one of the first daily newspapers in the United States, in New York City.

1835:San Antonio is captured by The Republic of Texas.

1968: Computer scientist Doug Engelbart and his team of researchers demonstrate the basics of the personal computer, at Brooks Hall in San Francisco. The computer mouse, videoconferencing, hyperlinks, and text and graphics editing are among the groundbreaking technologies introduced at the conference.

1972: "Tommy, can you hear me?" Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, the London Symphony Orchestra, and an all-star cast including Rod Stewart and Steve Winwood perform a concert version of the Who's rock opera Tommy, about a young "deaf, dumb and blind" pinball wizard.
