1903: Bicycle-maker brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright fly their motorized biplane glider, dubbed the Wright Flyer, over the sand dunes near Kitty Hawk, N.C. The longest flight of the day covers an impressive distance of 852 feet and lasts 59 seconds, truly inaugurating the era of air travel.
1955: Carl Perkins pens the tune "Blue Suede Shoes," a song that he would record 48 hours later at Sun Studios in Memphis, Tenn. "Blue Suede Shoes" would become one of the first crossover hits — popular on the country, pop, and rhythm and blues charts.
