APRIL 6
 1896:First modern Olympic Games opens in Athens, Greece, after a 1500 year ban.

1909:American explorers Robert Peary and Matthew Henson and four Eskimo companions become the first people to reach the North Pole, although controversy has surrounded the validity of their claim for the past century.

1917:
The U.S. Congress formally declares war upon Germany, bringing the United States into World War I on the side of the Allies. The global conflict had been raging since July 1914 and would ultimately claim the lives over 10 million men.

1930: James Dewar of the Continental Baking Company invents the Hostess Twinkie in Schiller Park, Ill. 

1995:Craig Newmark launches Craigslist for the city of San Francisco - the local classifieds website would later become available in major cities across the world.
