MARCH 10
1959:Thousands of Tibetans surround the Dalai Lama's summer palace in Lhasa, Tibet, in response to a rumor that the People's Liberation Army of China is planning to arrest the country's spiritual leader. The rebellion will spread through Lhasa, but will be summarily put down by the army. Before the end of the month, the Dalai Lama will flee the country.

1876: Telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell famously makes his first call to assistant Thomas Watson in his Boston laboratory, summoning him with, "Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you." Only three days before, Bell had received a patent for his invention, beating out competing inventor Elisha Gray.

1949: Mildred E. Gillars, the American-born, pro-Nazi radio broadcaster known as "Axis Sally," is convicted of treason in Washington, after a trial over her World War II work for Radio Berlin. She will serve 12 years in prison.
