DECEMBER 16
1901:English author and illustrator Beatrix Potter personally finances the first run of 250 copies of the beloved children's story Peter Rabbit, about the mischievous bunny who ventures into Mr. McGregor's garden.

1773: Defiant American colonists dressed as Mohawk Indians throw 342 chests overboard from British tea ships docked in Boston Harbor. The "Boston Tea Party" is in protest of the East India Company's monopoly of the tea trade and the heavy taxation of certain goods in the Colonies, without representation in Parliament.

1944: The German military launches a surprise counteroffensive in the Ardennes region of Belgium. It becomes known as the Battle of the Bulge and proves to be the bloodiest battle of World War II for the American military, with about 89,000 casualties, including 19,000 killed.
