1906:President Theodore Roosevelt becomes the first American recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, awarded for his mediation efforts at the conclusion of the Russo-Japanese War. Twenty-five years later, social reformer and activist Jane Addams will become the first female American recipient.
1936: King Edward VIII signs the instrument of abdication, giving up the British throne in order to marry American divorcée Wallis Simpson. His younger brother, the Duke of York, will succeed him as monarch, becoming King George VI the following day.
1958: One hundred and eleven passengers fly aboard a National Airlines Boeing 707 from New York City to Miami, inaugurating the first domestic passenger jet service in the United States.
